A durable, factory-style finish that transforms the look of your kitchen — at a fraction of replacement cost.

A properly prepared and spray-applied cabinet finish can last 8–12 years under normal kitchen use, depending on substrate condition, preparation quality, coating system and care. This is the step most low-cost operators skip. We do not skip it.

If you are looking for kitchen cabinet painting or cabinet spray painting in Melbourne’s south-east, we focus on proper degreasing, sanding, adhesion priming and spray-applied finishes for suitable laminate, timber veneer and MDF cabinetry.

Where possible, we remove doors and transport them to our spray facility — off-site spraying produces a cleaner, dust-free finish with no risk of overspray in the home. Where doors cannot be removed or the timeline is tight, we can spray on-site with full masking and surface protection.

Family-owned and operated, with members in the trade since 1987. No subcontractors — our own team handles your job from assessment to final walkthrough.

A Smarter Alternative to Full Kitchen Replacement

A full kitchen replacement can easily cost $20,000–$50,000 or more. In many homes, the cabinet boxes and drawer runners are structurally sound — only the visible surface is the problem. Outdated colour, worn finish, dull laminate.

Cabinet spray painting addresses the visible surface without the cost, timeline or disruption of a full renovation. At 10–20% of replacement cost, with an 8–12-year service life when done correctly, the economics are straightforward — provided the cabinets are suitable, and the preparation is done properly.

What determines whether it lasts

Degreasing

Kitchen surfaces accumulate grease and silicone residue not always visible. Any contamination between the substrate and the coating causes adhesion failure. Thorough degreasing before any prep work is not optional.

Sanding for mechanical adhesion

All surfaces must be sanded to create a key before priming — especially important on smooth laminate, which has no natural texture for a coating to bond to.

Substrate-specific adhesion primer

The most critical step — and the one most commonly skipped. Laminate, timber veneer and MDF each require a different primer system. Standard wall primer over laminate is the single most common cause of cabinet paint failure.

What We Can — and Can’t — Spray Paint

We assess every kitchen on-site before quoting. Most South East Melbourne homes have cabinets we can work with — but not all. We advise either way, honestly.

Suitable substrates

  • Laminate cabinet doors and panel faces
  • Timber and timber-veneer cabinetry
  • MDF cabinet fronts and drawer faces
  • Flat and profile-routed door styles
  • Bathroom vanities where the condition is suitable
  • Laundry joinery where surfaces are compatible

Not suitable for spray painting

  • Cabinets with delaminating doors or panel faces
  • Doors with significant moisture damage or swelling
  • Soft MDF that has swollen and lost its structural integrity
  • Cabinet boxes with structural damage beyond cosmetic repair

If your cabinets are not suitable for a durable result, we will tell you before quoting. We do not take on jobs where the result will not hold up.

Off-Site Spraying — Why It Matters

Our preferred approach is to remove all cabinet doors and drawer fronts and transport them to our spray facility. Off-site spraying produces a noticeably better result — controlled environment, no household dust settling into wet coats, no overspray risk on your benchtops and appliances, and better curing conditions.

Where off-site removal isn’t practical — due to access, timeline, or job scope — we carry out on site spraying with full masking of all surrounding surfaces, appliances, and benchtops. We advise which approach suits your job after inspection.

  • No dust contamination in the finish
  • No overspray risk in the home
  • Controlled spray environment
  • Better curing conditions
  • Cleaner, more consistent colour
  • On-site spraying available where needed

Our Cabinet Spray Painting Process

1

On-site assessment

We inspect doors, panel faces, and box surfaces to assess material type, condition and suitability. This determines the preparation and priming approach — critical for laminate surfaces.

2

Remove, clean and prepare

Doors and drawer fronts removed, hinges protected. All surfaces are deep-cleaned and degreased to remove grease and silicone residue. All faces sanded for mechanical adhesion.

3

Adhesion prime and spray apply

Substrate-specific adhesion primer applied — not standard wall primer. Two coats of hard-wearing topcoat spray applied for a smooth, even factory finish. Water-based polyurethane or acrylic enamel systems suited to kitchen environments.

4

Refit and inspect

Doors and hardware refitted and adjusted for alignment. Full inspection and walkthrough with you before sign-off.

Frequently Asked Questions — Cabinet Spray Painting

A properly prepared and spray-applied cabinet finish typically lasts 8–12 years with normal kitchen use. The key variables are preparation quality, adhesion priming and topcoat hardness. We use systems rated for kitchen environments.

Yes, with proper adhesion priming. Laminate is the most common substrate in homes in SE Melbourne. The preparation and primer stage is critical — this is why most failed cabinet repaints occur on laminate.

We prefer to remove doors and spray off-site at our facility — this produces a cleaner, harder finish with no dust contamination. Where removal isn’t practical, we spray in situ with full masking. We advise which suits your job after inspection.

Benchtops and appliances need to be cleared. We manage all masking of the surrounding areas. We discuss what’s required before the job starts.

A standard kitchen typically takes 2–4 days, depending on door count, profiles and drying time. Timeline is confirmed with the quote.

If the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and the layout works, spray painting is significantly more cost-effective — typically 10–20% of replacement cost with a comparable visual result. If boxes are damaged or the layout needs to change, a full renovation may make more sense. We advise honestly after inspection.
