Weatherboard painting done properly protects timber for years. Done badly, it accelerates the damage.

Weatherboard homes are among the most demanding painting jobs we carry out. The timber is directly exposed to Melbourne’s UV, rain and temperature swings — and it moves. Coatings applied without adequate preparation, a correct primer, or proper end-grain treatment fail faster than the original paint and leave moisture pathways into the timber structure.

We approach weatherboard painting as a timber repair and protection job, not just a colour change. Surface assessment, preparation, and proper product selection give the coating system a better chance of holding up well.

If you are looking for weatherboard painters in Melbourne’s south-east, we focus on timber repairs, peeling paint removal, end-grain sealing, correct priming and exterior coating systems suited to local conditions.

Family-owned and operated, with members in the trade since 1987. No subcontractors — our own team handles your job.

Why Weatherboard Painting Requires a Different Approach

Timber weatherboard moves with moisture and temperature — expanding in wet weather, contracting in dry. This movement works against any coating that isn’t properly adhered and flexible enough to cope with it. The most common failure points are end grain, butt joints, horizontal laps, and where boards meet window frames and trim.

Many weatherboard homes in SE Melbourne have accumulated multiple layers of paint from decades of repaints. Where these layers are failing or have lost adhesion, painting over them transfers the failure to the new coat. We assess adhesion and preparation requirements before quoting — not after starting.

What we check before quoting

  • Overall paint condition and adhesion — sound, chalking or failing
  • End grain exposure — primary entry point for moisture damage
  • Putty condition around windows — cracked or missing putty lets water in behind the paint film
  • Butt join condition — open joins allow moisture to wick into the timber
  • Timber condition — surface checking, rot, soft spots
  • Accumulated paint layer build-up — excessive build-up needs assessment before another coat

What’s Included in Our Weatherboard Painting Scope

Every weatherboard job is assessed and scoped on-site. The preparation required varies significantly between a 10-year-old home with one previous repaint and a 1950s weatherboard with six layers of old lead-based paint. We assess first, then quote.

Where timber repairs are needed — replacing boards, end-grain sealing, filling butt joins, repairing splits — we include these as part of the same written scope. You do not need to organise a carpenter before the painter can start.

  • Full surface assessment and preparation plan
  • High-pressure wash
  • Loose and peeling paint removed (hand scraping or mechanical)
  • End grain sealed on all exposed edges
  • Butt joins, and gaps filled with an appropriate flexible compound
  • Putty replacement around windows and frames
  • Timber repairs — minor rot, split boards, damaged sections
  • Sand and feather edges where paint was removed
  • Appropriate oil-based or acrylic primer for bare timber
  • Two coats of premium exterior topcoat
  • Masking and protection of glass and fixtures
  • Full site clean at completion

Common Issues We See in SE Melbourne Weatherboard Homes

Peeling and flaking paint

Usually caused by moisture penetration from poorly sealed end grain, open butt joins or failing putty. Painting over the peeling area without addressing the moisture entry point will only repeat the problem.

Accumulated paint layer failure

Homes repainted multiple times without proper preparation accumulate thick, brittle paint films that eventually crack and delaminate in sheets. Identifying the extent of this is part of our on-site assessment.

Timber checking and end grain damage

Exposed end grain — at board ends, window surrounds, and trims — is the most vulnerable point. Unprotected or poorly sealed end grain allows moisture to travel along the grain into the board. This causes swelling, splitting, and eventually rot.

Older Weatherboard Homes and Lead Paint

Weatherboard homes built before 1970 may contain lead-based paint. Disturbing lead-based paint through sanding or scraping can pose a health risk, so we identify lead-based paint risk during the site inspection and discuss the safest approach before work starts. If specialist lead paint removal or licensed abatement is required, we flag this before quoting.

Weatherboard Painting Costs

Weatherboard homes typically cost more to paint than brick veneer of equivalent size — the preparation is more intensive, and the surface area is larger. General guide for SE Melbourne:

Typical Guide Range

Standard single-storey weatherboard (3-bed)

$8,000 – $18,000+

Double-storey weatherboard

Homes with significant timber repairs, lead-paint risk, heavy paint buildup, or difficult access cost more. Where scaffolding or compliant access equipment is required, this is assessed before quoting. Written fixed-price quote after on-site inspection.

Timber assessment before quoting

We inspect the boards, end grain, putty, joins and accumulated paint layers before providing a quote. Preparation requirements determine the price, not a flat rate applied without looking.

Repairs included in scope

Minor timber repairs, end-grain sealing, putty replacement and join filling are included in the same written quote. No separate trades to organise before the painter can start.

Written fixed-price quote

No phone estimates. We inspect on-site, scope the preparation and repairs, and provide a written fixed-price quote.

Frequently Asked Questions — Weatherboard Painting

A properly prepared weatherboard repaint typically lasts 8–12 years, depending on orientation, the extent of preparation, product quality and whether moisture entry points were addressed. East and south-facing elevations in shade may need attention sooner due to mould and moisture.

Not always. If the existing paint adheres well, it can serve as a base with appropriate preparation. Where paint is failing, delaminating, or the build-up is excessive, full or partial removal is required. We assess this on-site.

Yes. Minor to moderate rot and damaged boards can be repaired or replaced as part of the painting scope. Significant structural rot is outside our scope — we advise clearly if that’s what we find.

Yes. We regularly work on Federation, Edwardian, and Californian bungalow homes. For a full heritage scope, including breathable coatings and period colour matching, see our Heritage & Period Home Painting service.

Often yes, depending on roof pitch and eave height. Where scaffolding or compliant access equipment is required, it is assessed during inspection and included in the written quote.

We use premium exterior acrylic systems from major Australian brands — Dulux, Taubmans or Haymes, depending on the substrate and condition. We advise on product choice after inspection.
