What Are VOCs and Why Do They Matter?

VOCs — Volatile Organic Compounds — are chemicals that evaporate from conventional paint during and after application. They are responsible for the strong paint smell that can linger for days or weeks after a paint job and, at higher concentrations, can cause headaches, nausea, eye and throat irritation, and respiratory symptoms.

Conventional interior paints can contain VOC levels of 150–400 grams per litre. Low-VOC paints typically contain less than 50 g/L. Zero-VOC paints contain less than 5 g/L, at which level the odour during and after painting is minimal, and the chemical exposure risk is significantly reduced.

Importantly, VOC levels continue to off-gas after painting is complete — not just while the paint is wet. Off-gassing from conventional interior paint can continue for days to weeks after a room is painted, which is why the smell persists even after the surfaces have dried.

Conventional Interior Paint

Typically 150–400 g/L VOC content. Strong odour during and after application. Off-gassing continues for days to weeks after painting. Less suitable for spaces where lower odour and reduced chemical exposure are priorities, such as nurseries, bedrooms and occupied homes.

Low-VOC Paint

Under 50 g/L VOC content. Significantly reduced odour. Lower chemical exposure during and after painting. Appropriate for most residential interiors, including bedrooms, nurseries and living areas.

Zero-VOC Paint

Under 5 g/L VOC content. Minimal odour during and after application. Suitable for nurseries, children’s rooms, bedrooms and spaces where chemical sensitivity is a concern. Can often be reoccupied sooner after painting.

Important Note on Product Selection

Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints can reduce paint odour and indoor chemical exposure compared with conventional interior paints, but product choice still depends on the surface, primer requirements, stain blocking, mould treatment and room use. We assess the surfaces first and recommend the lowest-odour system that is technically suitable for the job.

Who Requests Low-Tox Painting

Families with Young Children

Nurseries, children’s bedrooms and play areas where low chemical exposure matters.

Pregnant Women

Pregnant households wanting to reduce paint odour and indoor chemical exposure during preparation for a new arrival.

Asthma & Respiratory Conditions

Households in which conventional paint fumes trigger symptoms or discomfort during or after painting.

Chemical Sensitivities

People with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) or reactions to conventional paint products.

Environmentally Conscious Homeowners

Lower environmental impact during manufacture and application, reduced chemical load in the home.

Schools & Medical Environments

Spaces where low-odour and low-toxicity painting is a practical requirement for occupant health and scheduling.

Same Preparation. Safer Products.

Low-tox painting uses the same preparation standards as our standard interior painting. The product choice changes — the approach to surfaces, repairs and preparation does not. Choosing low-VOC paint while skipping preparation defeats the purpose — the off-gassing from inadequately treated mould or moisture is a health concern regardless of what is painted over it.

Where mould is present, it is treated before painting — not painted over. This is particularly important in low-tox contexts where the reason for choosing safer products is often household health.

  • Plaster patching and crack filling
  • Mould treatment before painting — not painted over
  • Sanding and surface levelling
  • Appropriate primer for the substrate (low-VOC primer where available)
  • Correct sealing of stains and bleed-through surfaces
  • Low-VOC or zero-VOC topcoat in specified colour and sheen
  • Floor protection, dust control and daily site clean throughout

Low-Tox Painting Costs

Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints carry a small price premium over standard interior paints — typically $10–$30 per four-litre tin more than comparable conventional products. For a standard interior paint job, the total additional material cost is usually $100–$400, depending on the area being painted. This is a modest premium for a significantly lower chemical load in your home.

Single Room Low-Tox Repaint

Typically $650 – $1,600+ depending on room size, ceiling height and preparation required. Material premium for low-VOC products: approximately $20–$80 per room.

3-Bedroom Home Interior

Typically $6,800 – $10,500+ for a full low-tox interior repaint including walls, ceilings and trims. Material premium over standard interior: approximately $150–$400 for the full home.

Targeted Rooms (Nursery, Bedroom)

Targeted low-VOC painting of specific rooms — nurseries, children’s bedrooms, or master bedrooms — can be scoped and quoted separately, without a full-home repaint.

Written fixed-price quote after on-site inspection. Labour and preparation costs are the same as standard interior painting. The product premium is the only additional cost.

Why South East Melbourne Homeowners Choose Us for Low-Tox Painting

We fix the surface first

We do not paint over problems to keep quotes low. Before any paint goes on, we assess cracks, failing render, mould staining, water marks and timber damage. If it needs fixing, we scope it and fix it.

One team, one scope

When plastering, minor carpentry, or tiling touch-ups are needed before painting, we include them in the same job with the same team. You do not need to coordinate a plasterer, then a painter, then a carpenter. One call, one written scope, one accountable team.

In the trade since 1987

Our team members have been working in the trade since 1987. That means we can identify preparation and product-selection issues that matter on low-tox jobs — mould treatment, stain blocking, primer compatibility, ventilation, surface condition and the right low-VOC or zero-VOC coating system for the room.

No subcontractors

Your job is handled by our own team from the initial inspection through to the final walkthrough. We do not hand your job to a subcontractor after quoting. The people who quote the job are the people who do the job.

Frequently Asked Questions — Low-Tox & Low-VOC Painting

VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound. VOCs are chemicals in conventional paint that evaporate during and after application, causing the characteristic paint smell. At higher concentrations, VOCs can cause headaches, eye and throat irritation and respiratory symptoms. Low-VOC paints contain under 50 g/L; zero-VOC paints contain under 5 g/L.

Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints significantly reduce chemical exposure compared to conventional paint and are appropriate for nurseries and children’s rooms. For nurseries and spaces used by newborns, zero-VOC products with the lowest available VOC content are the more cautious choice. We advise on appropriate product selection for specific situations.

Conventional interior paint can off-gas VOCs for days to weeks after painting is complete. Low-VOC products significantly reduce this period. Zero-VOC products produce minimal off-gassing — rooms can often be reoccupied within hours of drying with adequate ventilation.

Yes. Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints are available in full colour ranges and all standard sheen levels — flat, low-sheen, semi-gloss and gloss. A full interior repaint using low-VOC products throughout is achievable, with no limitations on colour or finish.

The material cost premium is typically $100–$400 higher than that of standard interior paint for a full home interior repaint. Labour and preparation costs are the same. The total project cost difference between standard and low-VOC painting is modest. Low-VOC and zero-VOC options are available on request for interior painting at no added premium on labour. You still get the same preparation-first process — patching, sanding, priming and clean application where required. For a guide to typical interior painting costs, including low-VOC options, see our house painting cost guide.

Most exterior painting products have higher VOC content than interior products because of the performance requirements of exterior exposure. The focus for low-tox painting is generally interior surfaces where occupants are exposed to off-gassing in enclosed spaces. We advise on the lowest-VOC options for exterior products when this is a priority.

Where low-VOC primers are appropriate for the substrate and surface condition, we use them. In some situations — such as stain blocking, mould sealing, or specific adhesion requirements — a conventional primer may be the technically correct choice. We discuss this during the on-site assessment and advise on the best approach for your specific surfaces.

Yes. Leading low-VOC and zero-VOC paint ranges from Australian manufacturers can offer durability, coverage, and finish quality comparable to conventional interior paints when specified and applied correctly. Product choice still matters, so we recommend the right system for the room, substrate and use case.

With proper ventilation, rooms painted with low-VOC products can typically be reoccupied sooner than rooms painted with conventional paint. Zero-VOC products produce minimal odour — some rooms can be used within a few hours of painting once surfaces are dry to the touch. We advise on specific reoccupation timing for your products and conditions.
